Requête Spatiale

The workshop “Requête Spatiale” took place at Campus Fonderie de l’Image in 2015. The goal of this exercise was to experiment and hijack the web technologies used for responsive design. It was conducted by Raphaël Bastide and Louise Drulhe for the graphic design students. This web page lists the resulting productions of this workshop.

  • It's up to you

It’s up to you is a responsive website about being the actor of animation, you could touch the window to make the move by yourself. You can handle it infinitely or make the choice to finish the movement or continue replay it. Our project is produce by photograph to make it real, by some facial expression. The scene always show contrast between something creaky and funny. There are four sequences who follow each other, and working with two sens, the big screen to the small one or the opposite. This process fixe the attention on the emotion in the end of the episode. So let off steam and play with us !

  • Responsive gender

On the landing page (or first screen) you will see the male leaders and heads of state of the EU. By making the screen smaller, the political men disappear to bring to the front the few women in politics and decision-making positions. We have made fun of the male politicians using images modified by photoshop and animated gifs to make the debate about the parity in politics and power more flexible and accessible. The two last screens demonstrate this disparity with numbers of men and women currently in power.

  • Browser Movie Maker

We decided to study the different point of view of device. For that, we have used the video medium. We work with four composition which corresponding to device which have the same size than the browser. The viewer can chose his point of view by changing the size of his windows. To do this video, we created 2 pigeons (which called Robert and Eugene) by using paper kraft technic. After quick talk they begin to dance with color flash. We have tried to make the user playing with his windows through a funny video, to create a new user experience.

  • Windows city

"Windows City" is an online game that uses the principles of "responsive design" and the pop-up system. Each web page is a residential sytem / format that changes with the size of the page, and each time you click in the window where the light is on, a new window / house opens in the browser. In this way, the user can create a collection of homes, houses, buildings, towers ... and create his town! The more (the browser’s) window is big, the more it represents a mass housing system. The more this window is small, the more it is individual housing system. And the creation of houses is infinite. This game can be used in a purely recreational and entertaining way, but it also poses a societal perspective on coexistence in urban areas and the saturation of space in the city.

  • Mirage

Mirage is an experimental project based on optical illusions induced by superposed moiré shapes. A movement is made visible thanks to different screen's sizes. the concept of responsive designs then becomes the main vector for this experimentation, thus creating an effect of depth, movement and noise through the design. Mirage insists on screens as a support for creation making experiments with the production of numerical collages through different visualisations. The User is invited to interact with the size of the screen and discover visual effects from the principles of a "moirage". This website project illustrates the very definition of what a mirage is, an optical effect which creates an illusion.

  • Détache, les yeux du ballon

Everything happens by accident/hazard... or maybe nothing ? Such as the "cadavre exquis", we propose to experiment fate aplied to creation. This generator of random compositions can lead you far from the usual creation process. You can discover a total absurd universe. Pictures are everywhere and create chaos. Your only tool is your computer mouse, the screen is your medium and the technic is the "responsive". By using the resize function of your window, the visual and sound mess let place to an unique composition. From a frenetic and uncomprehensive creation beyond understanding can appear a new absurd composition leaving to its creator the choice of the interpretation. The responsive promise you a completely aleatory composition. This way, the creation stays free from interpretation (or without) and we know that the ideation is different from one human being to another.

  • Snake eyes

We decided to propose an interaction with Responsive Design theme to resume the legendary phone game " SNAKE " which rocked our youth. The goal was to recreate the same principle as a game where the user interaction by decreasing its webpage pixel by pixel uncover a mystery . We recreate the world of video games 90s , using a futurist typography and very flash color codes . The difficulty was to achieve integration while respecting our desire to discover words pixels per pixel . Enjoy the game !

Bored with traditional games? Then discover Ratio, the new addictive game on internet that offers you a brand new experience of gameplay. Now you can play not INTO the web page but WITH it. The goal of this game is to reconstitute a puzzle by resizing the page of your browser. So first, you will have to deduct the final form and properly calibrate its pieces. Too easy you say? Well think again! If the puzzle is not positioned at the exact pixel, you will not access the next level. So, ready to take on the challenge ?

  • Out of responsive

This last years, the evolution of new technologies is getting on point. Different plateforms (smartphone, tablet,pc) and an adaptatif design : the responsive design, they have become an habit and even essential, leaving the place to an idea. What if it was all just a myth ? The project’s « out of responsive » goal is to invert the initial problem of responsive, proposing a deficient technology (big pixels appear on the screen folowed by an effect of black and white static, recalling the cinema’s beginings. Meant to ease the use and the reading of the user depending on the different screen’s sizes, the responsive becomes in this case a contstraint. In fact, the content doesn’t adapt to the format of the user anymore, it is the user who has to find the right size to be able to read the page. There are three « standard » formats (corresponding to the smartphone, tablet, and pc screens) that are essential, between wich the content gets damaged until it is no longer legible.

  • Dispersion

Dispersion is a typographic experimentation which plays with the fullness and the emptiness, with the dislocation of the characters and the geometric, abstract composition. Through a responsive design, the user is invited to intervene directly on the appearance of this composition. In this way, he become the main actor and not only a visitor. At first, we see some pieces of letters spread on the web page, but when we resize it, the pieces move closer to form a quote of Richard Powell : « Nothing is perfect ». Finally, the characters become tangled and let appear a monogram. It echoes the ephemerality and the infinity peculiar to internet : a " liquid " and flexible media, never fixed, where the forms as well as the individuals meet in the same space, cross, mix and sometimes divide.

  • Finding Edgar

Finding Edgar is a multisupport minigame. Edgar is a cheeky little pug, tired of his quiet little life, who fled to discover the world. To find him, you have to look for him across seven worlds, either with your friends, using different media (tablet, smartphone, computer ...), or alone, by resizing your browser’s window. Each of the seven worlds is a scale game, linked with the size of the window, operating as a zoom-in or zoom-out, from space to the kitchen, through the sky or mountains. In each of these worlds, vertical and horizontal scroll allows you to take a walk in the window. Each world has a very colorful palettes, related to its environment, with Edgar’s fur color as a common point. But beware ! Edggar won’t let you catch him so easily ! Once found, he might well slip through your fingers, to explore another world ! Have fun, and find Edgar !

  • 4 times a time

‘4 times a time’ is experimental experience on narration. As we can see when a book is transposed into a movie, some parts and pieces of the story can be intentionally forgotten and other things can be on the contrary modified and added. On this website, we took the decision to expose some questions to the different ways of reading a story. This experience is built in order to discover what each way of reading can bring to another one.

  • Infinity

Our project is called infinity. We wanted to use responsive design as a tool that allows readers to discover themself the history on the website. Thanks to the use of zoom drive they plunge in different universes depending on the screen-size. Our project is based on an imaginary universe that leads to a visual multiplication. At first sight the blue is omnipresent but when readers are seeking further by manipulating the sizes of the window to understand what they see, they discover the earth at different scales. They are encouraged to consider the infinitely small to understand what is infinitely big, and everything makes sense.
