Diff was shown during the solo exhibition of Raphaël Bastide Improving and finding solutions at Suzanne Gallery from february 19th to april 2nd 2015.
Data comparison in computing relates to methods and implementations that calculate differences and similarities between data objects, and provide adequate presentations of the output. The methods, implementations, and results are typically known as a diff, after the Unix diff utility. This concept was translated through the circular narration of an installation shown in the gallery space.
Documentation has always been the subject of my work, from my first solo exhibition BRANCH, through to the collaborative sculpture installed at iMAL during the summer 2013. With respect to my installations, the actual objects themselves are of secondary importance. Their purpose is, above all, to support the documentation: their dimensions and positions are selected according to criteria required to produce an elegant code, and the objects themselves are chosen for their proprieties: a lead plate because it can be creased, living crickets because it can lose life, a sand pile because its grains are uncountables.
I believe documentation can modify the perception of an object, as well as several states of an installation of objects. Through the circular narration of Diff, I am attempting to complete a Language designed to compare and depict differences between installations. This language is the subject of my work, and the gallery a laboratory where objects become slaves of subjected transformations.
